Background
On Wednesday the 22 February 2012 at 13.42 hours, a private person called the police saying that a man had been found injured in central Strömsund, Sweden.
The man, who is approximately 50 years old, was taken with ambulance heli-copter to the hospital in Östersund. At the hospital it was concluded that he had been shot in the head with a weapon. The man was later transported to Umeå University Hospital.
The weapon used was a handgun, and it was found in a bag nearby the injured man. The weapon has been confiscated.
The man who was shot is an Uzbek Imam called Obidkhon Sobitkhony. At present, he is being treated at Umeå University Hospital for life-threatening injuries.
Investigation
A police investigation concerning attempted murder started during Wednes-day, and the investigation is led by the Jämtland County Police.
At present, the police have no suspects. Yesterday, the police knocked on doors in the area of the crime. They will continue with this today, Thursday.
The material received in the case so far is being compiled and analysed. Certain technical evidence has been secured.
It is too early for the police to comment on the motive for the crime. The police are working with a wide scope and cannot exclude anything at present. Firstly, the material received has to be analysed.
There is no known threat against other individuals.
