The police passport office issues passports and national ID cards to Swedish citizens. You can apply for and pick up your new passport or ID card at any passport office in the country.
Everyone applying for a passport must appear personally at the passport office, even children and young people. For those under the age of 18, written permission from all legal guardians is always required.
If your old passport is still valid, it must be submitted for cancellation when you pick up the new one.
A fingerprint in the passport has been obligatory since 2009. If you have a valid passport without a fingerprint, you do not need to get a new one before it expires.
The fingerprint is taken at the passport office and is loaded into the passport’s chip. Children under the age of six, and those who have permanent damage to their fingers do not need to submit a fingerprint. If you have a temporary injury to one or both hands that make it impossible to submit a fingerprint, you can only receive a provisional passport.
Bring identification when you apply for a passport. The following identification is acceptable:
- A valid Swedish passport
- A valid national ID card
- A valid ID card for registered residents of Sweden
- A valid Swedish driver’s licence
- A Swedish SIS-branded ID card or an ID card issued by a government authority
If you lack identification, a person with their own identification - for example your spouse, common law spouse, parent, grandparent, or adult sibling - can confirm your identity. A provisional passport is not valid identification for a passport application.
If you have lost your passport or national ID card, you should report this to the police. It will then be blocked. Apply for a new passport or national ID card when you report the loss.
If you find your old passport or ID card, it is important that you report it to the police. If you have received a new pass or national ID card, you are obligated to submit the old one for cancellation. The old travel document may not be used.
If you lose your passport or national ID card while abroad, you should contact the nearest Swedish embassy or consulate.
